Writer in Residence – The Gathering Place at Leigh Square, Port Coquitlam

It is Friday, January 9th and I am madly preparing for my three month residency, beginning Monday. I have many things planned and I hope the folks in my city come out and play with words! It’s a new format for the city. Usually, visual artists hold this position, but I am excited to change things up a little. I’ve packed up the purple typewriter and I’m just finishing up the Community Poetry Board. I’m also looking forward to continuing my FoundWords604 project. This was a project I started with my Creative Writing Class for 9-12 yr olds. We would write an encouraging word/s on a card, decorate it and then leave it tied in a park, etc. The idea is for people to find these words, re-hide/tweet/email me their thoughts and feelings about the project. The response so far has been small, but encouraging. Hopefully, more people will become interested as I offer this project.
My intent is to blog each day I’m at the Gathering Place, about the people, what they’ve written, or their stories. At the end of the three months, we hope to publish a booklet of every poem, story or found word that is produced. It’s a great incentive for people to participate.

Ciao for now,
Nikki
